Frequently asked questions

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

There is a large body of research showing that video-based therapy produces results comparable to in-person therapy across many areas, including anxiety, depressive symptoms and trauma. What matters is not the format but the therapeutic relationship, how well the method fits the problem and continuity.

How long do sessions last and how often are they held?

Individual sessions usually last 50 minutes; couples sessions may be scheduled for longer. A weekly frequency is recommended at the start; as progress is made, the intervals become wider.

What are the fees, and does insurance cover them?

Current fees and the insurance situation are explained on the Fees and Insurance page. ViaNova Praktijk is an online practice that works contract-free (contractvrij); automatic reimbursement from the Dutch mandatory insurance is not guaranteed and depends on your policy.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

No. A GP (huisarts) referral is not required for private/online therapy. A referral is needed for the insurance-covered GGZ route; how that route works is explained in the guide 'Seeing a Psychologist in the Netherlands'.

Are the sessions confidential? Are they recorded?

The sessions fall under professional confidentiality (beroepsgeheim) and are not recorded. Information is shared only with your written consent; legal exceptions (such as a serious safety risk) are explained in the first session.

Which issues are addressed?

Anxiety and panic, OCD, depressive symptoms, trauma and EMDR, self-esteem problems, burnout, relationship and marital problems, family conflicts, adolescent difficulties, and migration and adjustment challenges.

Which issues are not addressed?

An acute psychiatric crisis, active suicide risk, severe substance dependence and conditions requiring intensive psychiatric care fall outside the scope of an online practice; in these cases the GP (huisarts), the crisis service (crisisdienst) or 112 is the right place to turn. Suitability is assessed together in the first session.

I live in Turkey, can I have a session?

The practice primarily serves Turkish speakers in the Netherlands and Europe; requests from outside Europe may be accepted based on a suitability assessment.

What happens in the first session?

An assessment is carried out in which complaints, expectations, risk situation and goals are clarified together. At the end, the kind of treatment plan that would be appropriate is discussed openly; the decision to continue is yours.

Can I cancel an appointment?

Yes. The cancellation and rescheduling terms (usually notice of 24 to 48 hours in advance) are provided in writing together with the appointment confirmation.

Can I request a session for my child?

We work with adolescents and, within the scope of parent counselling, with families; the details are on the Psychologist for Teens page. With younger children, work is generally done through the parents.

Which platform is used for the sessions?

A secure, end-to-end encrypted video connection is used; the link is sent with the appointment confirmation. A stable internet connection and headphones are recommended.
